My actual jack-o-lantern I carved this year

Halloween is hands down one of my favorite holidays, and today marks the beginning of the Halloween weekend. Being Halloween weekend, not only is it time to break out the costumes and candy, but Halloween weekend is also my weekend to indulge in horror and fantasy books and movies. As far as movies go I’m a fan of the cult classics such as Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Beetlejuice. And if I really want to freak myself out, I’ll spring for the Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street series that I adored growing up. As far as books go, this would usually be my time to break out the Poe and recount some great bone-chilling short stories, but since I’ve already read and re-read Poe numerous times, this year I read the works and will continue reading the works of our very own Kbuuk authors. Here are a few quick reviews of some works currently available in the Kbuuk bookstore.

Walking Wolf Road by Brandon M. Herbert

This is geared more towards a young adult audience, but it has everything. Ghosts, werewolfs, romance, and some beautifully arranged prose.  With sentences such as “Night had devoured the sky and moonlight sliced between the trees, illuminating the mist that filled the air, cold with the promise of Autumn.” And, “The sound of a crow, tinny and distant like an old radio, wore away at my nerves,” I hope to see more work from author Brandon Herbert on our platform soon!

The story follows high school student Jimmy as he is forced to find a new crowd when his stepfather moves him to a new school his senior year. Not only does he find a new crowd, but he discovers powers within himself that have been hidden away.

Consumed by Laura A. Ellison

Although this work from Laura Ellison is technically a thriller/suspense novel, there is a very wicked character involved, who has evil intentions. Additionally, the book opens with a rather gruesome account of the protagonist who finds himself in the burn ward of a hospital while he is trying to recover from being set on fire and left for dead. The thought of that happening in reality is a little unsettling. Follow the story of Derek Ballantine as he uncovers the mystery of who burned in him and left him for dead.

Devil Will Care by L. Chambers-Wright

I’m going to call this genre a contemporary Gothic Romance. How, you ask? Well because the author blends modern elements and the use of technology with elements of horror, paranormal, and romance. It’s a quick read with an interesting twist.

These are a couple of the other titles that caught my eye that I haven’t quite made it to yet: The Dark by Nicholas House, Christal Knight by D.B. Sweet, and Five by Elizabeth Bachle.

And if you’re looking for something fun for the kiddies, don’t forget to check out Monster Dreams by J.L. Williams. A whimsical monster tale for the children.
